VUB installs more than 8,000 solar panels in the fight against climate change

ree

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has further expanded its solar panel park. With the installation of 470 additional panels on Building Z of the Etterbeek campus, in collaboration with Green Spark Technics and Green Power Future, the total on the Etterbeek and Jette campuses now stands at 8,034.

Step into the Climate Action Plan

The expansion is part of the VUB's Climate Action Plan, which aims to equip all roofs with solar panels by 2030 and achieve full climate neutrality by 2050. Since the first installation in 2020, the number of panels has grown significantly. Together, they have a capacity of 3,599 kWp and an estimated annual production of 3,000 MWh – accounting for approximately 12% of the university's electricity consumption.

Efficient use of roofs

Although many buildings are tall and energy-intensive, such as laboratories, almost every available roof is utilized. Further optimizations are still needed to increase the share of solar energy. Energy coordinator Maarten Cumps emphasizes that solar panels are not only the cheapest energy source but also contribute to resilience in a time of geopolitical and energy uncertainty.

Sustainable cooperation

The installation was financed through third-party financing, allowing the VUB to transition without bearing the full investment itself. Green Spark Technics, which handles installation and management, guarantees maximum returns for ten years.

Looking ahead

According to Rector Jan Danckaert, the expansion is a new step toward a sustainable and climate-neutral university. With more than 8,000 solar panels, the VUB is confirming its role as a leader in the energy transition.
