In the heart of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, children grow up every day with dreams, curiosity, and talent. But for a significant number of these young people, opportunities are not self-evident. Child poverty is not an abstract concept, but a daily reality that deeply impacts the lives of families, their upbringing at home, and their school careers.

Poverty doesn't just operate through a lack of money—it's a system of social exclusions intertwined with education, employment, housing, and leisure time. This structural barrier gives children less room to grow, with tangible consequences such as family stress, limited access to learning resources, or exclusion from activities that are as essential to development as school hours themselves.

An uneven start has long-lasting consequences

Research shows that poverty often leads to dropping out of school, loss of self-confidence, and a vicious cycle of exclusion . Moreover, education doesn't always serve as a level playing field—children growing up in poverty often start from a starting line further behind that of their peers. In neighborhoods like Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, where social and economic vulnerability is more prevalent, this problem takes on a facet: children who are full of potential, but for whom additional school costs—from laptops and books to excursions and sports activities—quickly become a barrier.

GO! Atheneum Caroline Pauwels: more than a school building

Within these challenges lies an opportunity—and it is being embraced by educational institutions like GO! Atheneum Caroline Pauwels . This secondary school in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek offers a broad general education and operates with a renewed pedagogical approach focused on empowerment, connection, and wonder . It bears the name and vision of former VUB rector Caroline Pauwels, who saw education as a powerful tool for social change and inclusion. ( Atheneum Caroline Pauwels )

GO! Atheneum Caroline Pauwels is more than just a place to take classes. It's an environment where students from diverse backgrounds are supported to discover and develop their talents, and prepare for further education and a full-fledged role in society—just as Caroline Pauwels envisioned.

Don't wait for policy, act yourself

That's why OSB-VUB's initiative to organize a benefit event on Sunday, April 26, 2026, is a powerful step toward concrete solidarity . With this benefit afternoon, OSB-VUB aims to lower financial barriers by supporting less fortunate parents , so their children can participate worry-free in all school activities and opportunities that come with them, demonstrating that good opportunities aren't a luxury, but a right . This way, they can fully take their place at schools like GO! Atheneum Caroline Pauwels. During the event, we hope not only to help these children but also to see them back on our campus in the future.

📅 When? Sunday, April 26, 2026

📍 Where? PilarBox & Aula Q (VUB Etterbeek campus)

📌 Why? To remove financial barriers and make equal educational opportunities a reality. ( https://www.osb-vub.be/event )

The event brings together stories, music, and social engagement around one simple yet crucial belief: financial resources should never be the difference between growing and falling behind.

A call to everyone

Poverty affects us all—it's not "someone else's problem," but a sign that our society isn't yet inclusive. By supporting this benefit event, you're not just making a donation: you 're investing in future prospects , in opportunities that would otherwise remain out of reach.

Let's give those children what they deserve: a fair chance to learn, grow, and realize their talents — without the purse strings determining who can and cannot participate.

Together we can ensure that poverty no longer stifles talent, but creates space for hope, ambition, connection and wonder .
