Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is celebrating a first: the first class of Bachelor's students in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is graduating. These five students successfully completed the entire three-year program. This makes VUB history with the only Bachelor's program in Flanders that offers such a broad, interdisciplinary perspective on AI.
Unique training
The bachelor's program combines insights from computer science, machine learning, logic, mathematics, cognitive psychology, and linguistics. Students not only learn to develop intelligent systems but also draw inspiration from natural phenomena, such as the collective intelligence of ants. Furthermore, ethical and legal issues are addressed, ensuring that graduates are not only technologically strong but also socially aware.
Strong growth and international recognition
According to Rector Jan Danckaert, the program is unique in Flanders and is supported by the expertise of the internationally renowned VUB Artificial Intelligence Lab. Interest grows every year: from an initial group of five pioneers to around 45 students now, with an annual increase of approximately 10%.
Professor Bart De Boer, chairman of the education council, points to the international recognition: two of the first graduates are already progressing to the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence.
Impact in various sectors
With their broad knowledge and practical skills, graduates are ready to make an impact in diverse fields such as IT, media, healthcare, biotechnology, transportation, and energy. The program prepares them to develop innovative AI solutions and collaborate across disciplines – precisely what the rapidly growing AI sector needs.
