Prof. Van Steirteghem will focus in his lecture on the ethical aspects and struggles that were waged around these themes in the 1980s. Medically assisted reproduction was considered morally unacceptable by some authorities and scientific research on an embryo was then a religious taboo. Together with Prof. Dr. Devroey, he ensured several firsts and breakthroughs in reproductive medicine, both at European and global level, and they received numerous awards.
The lecture will focus on these ethical aspects and the fact that this advocate, based on liberal-humanist ideas, has done work that still benefits everyone with a fertility problem today.
