About the event
"When the time is right, I want euthanasia, daughter."
Speaking is Jan (former journalist and director-general VRT), Barbara's father, just after his Alzheimer's diagnosis. He saw his mother deteriorate inhumanely from the disease and decided to write a different future for himself.
He died a year and a half later, on November 23, 2020, in the early stages of the disease, because euthanasia can only be obtained if you are still mentally competent. With dementia, euthanasia therefore occurs too early anyway.
But what is euthanasia? What, and who, is involved? And can you choose it in all situations? Is your life – and your death – really yours?
Barbara Ceuleers investigated it, from A to Z, from Alzheimer's and doctors to self-determination and hospitals. She spoke with experts, experienced people, doctors and politicians. It became a personal story, of a father and his daughter. Of a deadly choice. Of powerlessness and injustice. But above all one of love. Because he was there at her birth; she was there at his death.
